Abstract

Purpose

Considering the response lag and viscous slip oscillation of the system caused by cylinder piston friction during automatic polishing of aero-engine blades by a robotic pneumatic end-effector, the purpose of this study is to propose a constant force control method with adaptive friction compensation.

Design/methodology/approach

First, the mathematical model of the pneumatic end-effector is established based on the continuous LuGre model, and the static parameters of the LuGre model are identified to verify the necessity of friction compensation. Second, aiming at the problems of difficult identification of dynamic parameters and unmeasurable internal states in the LuGre model, the parameter adaptive law and friction state observer are designed to estimate these parameters online. Finally, an adaptive friction compensation backstepping controller is designed to improve the response speed and polishing force control accuracy of the system.

Findings

Simulation and experimental results show that, compared with proportion integration differentiation, extended state observer-based active disturbance rejection controller and integral sliding mode controller, the proposed method can quickly and effectively suppress the polishing force fluctuation caused by nonlinear friction and significantly improve the blade quality.

Originality/value

The pneumatic force control method combining backstepping control with the friction adaptive compensation based on LuGre friction model is studied, which effectively suppresses the fluctuation of normal polishing force.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present a control method to realize the constant force grinding of automobile wheel hub.

Design/methodology/approach

A constant force control strategy combined by extended state observer (ESO) and backstepping control is proposed. ESO is used to estimate the total disturbance to improve the anti-interference and stability of the system and Backstepping control is used to improve the response speed of the system.

Findings

The simulation and grinding experimental results show that, compared with the proportional integral differential control and active disturbance rejection control, the designed controller can improve the dynamic response performance and anti-interference ability of the system and can quickly track the expected force and improve the grinding quality of the hub surface.

Originality/value

The main contribution of this paper lies in the proposed of a new constant force control strategy, which significantly improved the stability and precision of grinding force.

Abstract

Purpose

Considering the influence of environmental noise and modeling error during the process of the robotic automatic grinding aero-engine blade, this study aims to propose a method based on the extended state observer (ESO) to reduce the fluctuation of normal grinding force.

Design/methodology/approach

First, the measurement range of the six-dimensional force sensor is calibrated according to the maximum acceleration of end-effector and grinding force. Second, the gravity and zero drift compensation model is built to compensate for measurement error. Finally, the switching function is designed based on the difference between the expected grinding force and the actual feedback value. When the value of function stays within the switching band, a nonlinear active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) loop is applied. When the function value reaches outside the switching band, an ESO-based sliding mode control (SMC) loop is applied.

Findings

The simulated and experimental results show that the proposed control method has higher robustness compared with proportion-integral-derivative (PID), Fuzzy PID and ADRC.

Research limitations/implications

The processing parameters of this paper are obtained based on the single-factor experiment without considering the correlation between these variables. A new control strategy is proposed, which is not only used to control the grinding force of blades but also promotes the development of industrial control.

Originality/value

ESO is used to observe environmental interference and modeling errors of the system for real-time compensation. The segment control method consisting of ESO-based SMC and ESO-based ADRC is designed to improve the robustness. The common application of the two parts realizes suppression of fluctuation of grinding force.

This study aims to realize the constant force grinding of automobile wheel hub.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to realize the constant force grinding of automobile wheel hub.

Design/methodology/approach

A force control strategy of backstepping + proportion integration differentiation (PID) is proposed. The grinding end effector is installed on the flange of the robot. The robot controls the position and posture of the grinding end actuator and the grinding end actuator controls the grinding force output. First, the modeling and analysis of the grinding end effector are carried out, and then the backstepping + PID method is adopted to control the grinding end effector to track the expected grinding force. Finally, the feasibility of the proposed method is verified by simulation and experiment.

Findings

The simulation and experimental results show that the backstepping + PID strategy can track the expected force quickly, and improve the dynamic response performance of the system and the quality of grinding and polishing of automobile wheel hub.

Research limitations/implications

The mathematical model is based on the pneumatic system and ideal gas, and ignores the influence of friction in the working process of the cylinder, so the mathematical model proposed in this study has certain limitations. A new control strategy is proposed, which is not only used to control the grinding force of automobile wheels, but also promotes the development of industrial control.

Social implications

The automatic constant force grinding of automobile wheel hub is realized, and the manpower is liberated.

Originality/value

First, the modeling and analysis of the grinding end effector are carried out, and then the backstepping + PID method is adopted to control the grinding end effector to track the expected grinding force. The nonlinear model of the system is controlled by backstepping method, and in the process, the linear system composed of errors is obtained, and then the linear system is controlled by PID to realize the combination of backstepping and PID control.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the electrochemical corrosion behavior of a five-layer Al alloy composites (4343/4047/3003/4047/4343) with a thickness of 0.2 mm in NaCl solution.

Design/methodology/approach

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, polarization curve and morphology analyses were used to study the corrosion behavior of the Al alloy composites from cross-sectional and plane directions.

Findings

The corrosion resistance of the surface from the plane direction was higher than that from the cross sections. Si-enrich particles were observed in the outer 4047/4343 layer, and AlFeCuMnBi phases were identified in the core 3003 layer. The galvanic coupling between the Si-enrich particle and the Al matrix accelerated the dissolution Al matrix.

Originality/value

This work lays the experimental foundation for corrosion mechanism of the Al alloy composite plate.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims at investigating the differential impact of different CSR communication strategies on consumers' brand trust and consequent attitudes and behaviors in the credence goods market.

Design/methodology/approach

An experimental laboratory study was conducted to collect data from graduate students (n = 414) from two Chinese universities. Structural equation modeling was used to test the hypothesized model.

Findings

The results show that a dialogical communication strategy, compared to a monological communication strategy, is significantly more effective in increasing consumers' brand trust for credence goods as well as their willingness-to-buy and positive word-of-mouth. The results also confirm the mediating effect of CSR knowledge and the moderating effect of broad-scope trust on the relationship between CSR communication strategies and brand trust.

Practical implications

This study implies that in order to promote consumer trust and supportive behaviors toward brands, managers of companies in credence goods market should consider the increased use of various dialogical CSR communication strategies.

Originality/value

The study is one of the first to verify the impact of dialogical vs monological CSR communication strategies on consumers of credence goods.

This study aims to investigate the corrosion inhibitor effect of migrating corrosion inhibitor (MCI) on Q235 steel in high alkaline environment under cathodic polarization.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the corrosion inhibitor effect of migrating corrosion inhibitor (MCI) on Q235 steel in high alkaline environment under cathodic polarization.

Design/methodology/approach

This study investigated the electrochemical characteristics of Q235 steel with and without MCI by polarization curve and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Besides, the surface composition of Q235 steel under different environments was analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. In addition, the migration characteristic of MCI and the adsorption behavior of MCI under cathodic polarization were studied using Raman spectroscopy.

Findings

Diethanolamine (DEA) and N, N-dimethylethanolamine (DMEA) can inhibit the increase of Fe(II) in the oxide film of Q235 steel under cathodic polarization. The adsorption stability of DMEA film was higher under cathodic polarization potential, showing a higher corrosion inhibition ability. The corrosion inhibition mechanism of DEA and DMEA under cathodic polarization potential was proposed.

Originality/value

The MCI has a broad application prospect in the repair of damaged reinforced concrete due to its unique migratory characteristics. The interaction between MCIs, rebar and concrete with different compositions has been studied, but the passivation behavior of the steel interface in the presence of both the migrating electric field and corrosion inhibitors has been neglected. And it was investigated in this paper.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the tribological properties of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) composites modified by nano-serpentine and nano-lanthanum oxide in a seawater environment.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, seven PTFE composites were prepared by unified design method and vacuum thermoforming method, and their hardness, water absorption and tribological properties were measured under seawater environment. The modification effects and thermal stability of the materials were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermal gravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry. This paper analyzed the wear mechanism of PTFE composites by scanning electron microscopy and energy spectroscopy.

Findings

The results showed that the hardness of the PTFE composites were all improved, but the water absorption was increased with the increase of additives. The modification of nano-serpentine was successful and the thermal stability of PTFE composites was better. The lowest coefficient and minimum wear rate are 0.0267 and 8.67 × 10−5 · mm3 · (N · m)−1 respectively, which is 34.9% and 76% less than the pure PTFE.

Originality/value

The analysis showed that the wear mechanism of PTFE composites was abrasive wear and a small amount of adhesive wear, and when the additive content was appropriate, it easily formed a transfer film on the surface mating parts.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to reveal the effect of nano-Al2O3 particle addition on the nucleation/growth kinetics, microhardness, wear resistance and corrosion resistance of Co–P–xAl2O3 nanocomposite plating.

Design/methodology/approach

The kinetics and properties of Co–P–xAl2O3 nanocomposite plating prepared by electroplating were investigated by electrochemical measurements, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Vickers microhardness measurement, SRV5 friction and wear tester and atomic force microscopy.

Findings

A 12 g/L nano-Al2O3 addition in the plating solution can transform the nucleation/growth kinetics of the plating from the 3D progressive model to the 3D instantaneous model. The microhardness of the plating increased with the increase of nano-Al2O3 content in plating. The wear resistance of the plating did not adhere strictly to Archard’s law. An even and denser corrosion product film was generated due to the finer grains, with a high corrosion resistance.

Originality/value

The effect of different nano-Al2O3 addition on the nucleation/growth kinetics and properties of Co–P–xAl2O3 nanocomposite plating was investigated, and an anticorrosion mechanism of Co–P–xAl2O3 nanocomposite plating was proposed.

This paper aims to study the effect of Hg2+ on the corrosion behavior of Al–2%Zn coatings on AA5083 in 3.5 Wt.% NaCl solution.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to study the effect of Hg2+ on the corrosion behavior of Al–2%Zn coatings on AA5083 in 3.5 Wt.% NaCl solution.

Design/methodology/approach

Potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy are used to investigate the effect of Hg2+ on the corrosion behavior. The surface and cross-sectional morphology are characterized by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) to further reveal the corrosion mechanism of Hg2+.

Findings

The results show that the corrosion behavior of the coating changes significantly as the concentration of Hg2+ increases from 5 to 30 μg/L. The corrosion production film can inhibit the corrosion process when Hg2+ concentration is in the range of 0.5–5 μg/L, while Hg2+ can promote the corrosion process significantly when its concentration reaches to 30 μg/L. The generation rate of dense oxide film on the coating surface is faster than dissolution rate when the concentration of Hg2+ is in the range of 0–5 μg/L, which makes the coating “self-healing” and thus slightly slows down the corrosion rate. The EDS analysis shows that excessive Hg2+ are preferentially deposited at locations with inhomogeneous electrochemical properties, which in turn accelerates corrosion.

Originality/value

The corrosion resistance of Al-based coatings is significantly affected by Hg2+ in seawater. Thus, it is important to explain the corrosion mechanism of Al–2%Zn coatings under the combined effect of Hg2+ and Cl in 3.5 Wt.% NaCl solution.
